CARRABANE NS Students visit to Kilconieron Group Water Scheme.

On a bright sunny morning in early May, 5 th class students from Carrabane National School were warmly welcomed to the Kilconieron Group Water treatment plant in Co. Galway for an educational tour of their local water facility. The students had completed the All About Water programme in the classroom under the guidance of their teacher Ms Bláthnaid Burke.

Organised by Kilconieron Group Water Scheme and Glanua, the visit formed part of a broader initiative to engage young people in understanding the importance of source protection and the water treatment process.

Kilconieron Group Water Scheme Secretary, Michael Fox provided students with an overview of the scheme’s formation and history along with a presentation of the network maps of over 200 households currently served in the area. A practical demonstration took place, using a length of rope, to show the depth of the bore well. This was followed by a guided tour of the treatment plant led by Glanua’s Colin Joyce and Operations & Maintenance technicians Steve Costello and Stephen Keary. The team offered students a hands-on, behind-the-scenes look at the process involved in delivering clean, safe drinking water to the community. A highlight of the visit was a live jar testing demonstration illustrating how coagulants are introduced to raw water samples to form and settle floc- replicating the process used on a full scale within the treatment facility.

To cap off the day, students and teachers alike were treated to a surprise visit from an ice-cream van- a wonderful way to finish a fantastic learning experience. Each pupil also received a souvenir journal a pen, provided by Kilconieron GWS.

Visits such a this one not only educate but also create a greater appreciation for the collective effort required to deliver high-quality drinking water to our taps.

Sincere thanks to the Geraldine (Manager) and Board of KGWS, Walsh Waste, Glanua personnel and most of all the enthusiastic pupils and teachers and Principal of Carrabane NS for making the day a great success.
